Pourquoi participer

We will present the need for urgent innovation contributing to scalable, resilient and effective conservation outcomes aimed to resolve the global freshwater species crisis after decades of neglect. It is essential to find solutions that empower communities with capacity to act and tools to provide for well-connected and healthy systems.

Description de la séance

Despite freshwater ecosystems’ critical ecological and societal importance, they are among the most threatened globally, and freshwater species face unprecedented pressures, driven by numerous anthropogenic factors. Freshwater conservation is vital for maintaining biodiversity and ensuring the health and resilience of ecosystems that provide essential services, including water purification, irrigation, flood regulation, carbon storage, cultural and spiritual values and connectivity. Protecting and addressing threats to freshwater habitats and species is critical for sustainable futures for nature and people. We will focus on practices and mechanisms that effectively protect and conserve aquatic biodiversity and ecosystems, outlining actionable innovative steps that enhances ecosystem services and drive positive outcomes for nature and local communities. It will explore how well-connected freshwater systems can enhance ecosystem resilience and adaptation to climate change. Leveraging science, innovation and community-based conservation models, we present pathways for addressing the ecological challenges, accelerating conservation impact and achieving global biodiversity targets.
