Particular qualifications:
I am a conservation leader having served at the helm of reputable conservation organisations. I am from Kenya and the only commission candidate from Africa, moreover, my election in this role will be the first for Africa. I am committed to the integration of effective communication and environmental education in IUCN programmes and policies. I have experience in strategy development and as the deputy Chair for IUCN I have represented the commission in forums promoting the mandate of CEC and have motivated commission members to take action for nature. As the CEO of a national organisation, I play a central role in corporate governance, and I am accountable to the WCK Board for overall performance and governance compliance. I also seat on the boards of the following organisations: 1. Conservation Alliance of Kenya 2. African Fund for Endangered Wildlife 3. Ecotourism Kenya. I have demonstrated commitment to conservation and sustainable development. As Deputy Chair, vice Chair for Eastern and Southern Africa and as former deputy Chair of the Kenya country committee I have developed global view of IUCN. I have attended PPC and understand its work and am committed to join this committee if elected. My English language is excellent, this having been the language of instruction. I am a recipient of the Brandwein award for 2020 with an understanding of IUCN and have vast global networks developed over the years. Although I have my employer’s support, I will be leaving formal employment in 2026 to focus on this role.
Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:
As an environmental educator, I use strategic communication, education and awareness for positive conservation outcomes. IUCN concerns include biodiversity loss, pollution, sustainability, protected areas, and others. Education and awareness play a crucial role in biodiversity and environmental conservation by raising awareness, creating understanding and promoting sustainable practices. My work in designing and implementing outreach projects for schools, youth and communities empowers them with the knowledge and understanding of the importance and the impacts of biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, interconnectedness of ecosystem and nature-based solutions such as pollinator, tree growing and native vegetation restoration. The programmes that I develop on coast and ocean literacy helps to conserve these key resources for the benefit of species and humanity while the climate change literacy programmes and activities and I conduct create awareness and impart skills and knowledge empowering people to take informed action against climate change and to live sustainably with nature. As a member of #natureforall movement, I conduct activities that connect people to nature, inspiring love for nature and motivating them to take action for nature. My work in mobilizing advocacy campaigns on pollution especially plastic pollution protects land, freshwater and marine ecosystems while my involvement in CEC’s Nature based Education Task force and to support the work of this workforce, I conduct environmental education workshops for teachers and am currently coming up with a conservation education curriculum.
