Biography
His career has been dedicated to the planning, management, monitoring, teaching, and study of biodiversity conservation in the developing world. I believe that biodiversity can achieve its conservation goals integrated with social and economic goals. While working for Costa Rica's Servicio de Parques Nacionales, he directed field units and was responsible for protected area management and planning. He was also responsible for the management of a subsystem of marine reserves. In addition, he initiated efforts to involve local stakeholders in the management of protected areas. His graduate work focused on protected area management, planning and reinvention at the site and the system levels.
During his career, he has developed unique experience in different topics related to biodiversity conservation in Mesoamerica, Mexico and the Caribbean. This experience has been acquired as government staff, project director, technical expert, consultant, and professor. In addition, during most of his career, he has worked with IUCN through the World Commission on Protected Areas as well as the Mesoamerica, South America and Asia Regional Offices.
For five years he worked for The Nature Conservancy in the USAID's Programa Ambiental para Centroamerica (PROARCA) / Central American Protected Areas System (CAPAS) project. During that time he acquired relevant experience providing technical assistance to private and public protected area managers in seven countries. His work in Central America allowed him to relate to national and local governments, international, national and local NGOs and also office and field staff. The position focused on innovation, and he developed programs in protected area management effectiveness implemented in the seven countries, long-term financial planning, frameworks for establishing private reserve networks, applying the first ever gap analysis of vegetation cover of Central America, and developing ecotourism best management practices.
