Atef LIMAM

Biography

Dr. Atef LIMAM has always been fascinated by marine biodiversity. Most of his career has been devoted to the conservation efforts and initiatives of the Mediterranean marine and coastal biodiversity. 

After obtaining an Engineering diploma, a master’s degree and a PhD in Environment and Aquatic Resources from the National Institute of Agronomy of Tunis (INAT), he was blessed with the opportunity to work with the Specially Protected Areas Regional Activity Centre (UNEP/MAP-SPA/RAC), the Regional Centre for the marine biodiversity conservation and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) establishment and development in the Mediterranean under the umbrella of the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea and its Coastal Areas. 

His wealth of experience is backed up by many years of working, since 2002, in assisting the Mediterranean countries, in particular the eastern and southern countries, in identifying and developing their national systems of Marine Protected Areas and spatial-based conservation measures contributing hence to boost the Mediterranean system of Marine Protected Areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, in line with the global framework and targets of the Convention of Biological Diversity.
