Amir Iqbal has been serving as Chief Executive Officer of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) and its community development arm, Thar Foundation, since 2021. As Pakistan’s pioneering coal mining venture, SECMC is widely regarded as one of the country’s most successful public–private partnerships, playing a central role in enhancing national energy security while driving inclusive development in Thar.
Under Amir’s leadership, SECMC has been positioned for strategic growth, guided by the vision of becoming a world-class, sustainable mining company. The Company’s achievements have been recognized through prestigious national and international certifications and awards, including the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Gold Standard and Mining Technology Excellence Awards. An empathetic and purpose-driven leader, Amir has steered Thar Foundation to embed an inclusive business model that prioritizes community investments in education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, village infrastructure and biodiversity conservation.
With over 35 years of diverse leadership experience, Amir has led cross-functional teams across Pakistan, Australia, and Africa for some of the largest corporations. Before joining SECMC, he held leadership roles in Engro Agritrade, Engro Fertilizers and Bayer Pakistan.
Driven by his passion for nurturing young leaders and strengthening industry-academia linkages, Amir has also served as adjunct faculty at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and the Karachi School of Business & Leadership (KSBL). On a personal level, Amir is a devoted husband and father of three, who enjoys reading, golf and cycling.
