Why attend

This session showcases the Western Iberian Transboundary Biological Corridor as a pioneering model of ecological connectivity and sustainable development. It highlights Nature-based Solutions that strengthen biodiversity, climate resilience, and rural livelihoods, offering transferable lessons for conservation, restoration, and cross-border cooperation.

Session Description

The Western Iberian Transboundary Biological Corridor, spanning Spain and Portugal (Spanish Portugues biological corredor), is a critical biodiversity hotspot sheltering emblematic species such as the Iberian lynx, black stork, and cinereous vulture. Supported by international and national organizations, this initiative aims to integrate ecological connectivity, climate change adaptation, and rural development across over 13,000 hectares under participatory conservation. The event will present the region’s ecological and social relevance, key threats, and innovative strategies based on ecosystem restoration, sustainable ecotourism, and the bioeconomy. It will emphasize how cross-border cooperation and Nature-based Solutions can deliver tangible benefits for both biodiversity and local communities, while advancing global conservation goals. By showcasing milestones and next steps, the session will inspire policymakers, researchers, and practitioners with a holistic, transferable approach linking conservation, resilience, and human well-being.
