Panellists will share lived experiences and insights, offering practical lessons for strengthening legal and policy frameworks that recognize Indigenous leadership in conservation, restoration, and spatial planning.

Session Description

Indigenous Peoples and local communities have their own systems of spatial planning and resource use within their lands, waters, and territories, developed collectively over time through traditional knowledge and customary sustainable use, which contributes to the conservation of biodiversity. Panellists will present their experiences in spatial planning and resource use systems within their lands, waters, and territories, as well as their contributions to national spatial planning. This discussion will be within the context of the Guidelines to Strengthen the Legal and Policy Framework for the Recognition of the Role of Indigenous and Traditional Territories of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities In Conservation, Restoration And Spatial Planning which will be considered by the First meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and Other Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity Related to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (SB8J- 1) to be held from the 27 to 30 October in Panama City, Panama
