Controversial or commonplace, wildlife use shapes conservation outcomes. This session moves beyond emotion to examine trophy hunting through evidence, and shows how community-based harvesting of African geranium creates fair, sustainable value chains.
Session Description
Wildlife use can divide or unite. Dr. Dilys Roe presents findings from a global evidence review on trophy hunting, cutting through rhetoric to examine its ecological and socio-economic impacts. In contrast, Dr. Frank Vorhies shares the story of African geranium harvesting in South Africa and Lesotho, where community-based practices certified under FairWild show how wild resources can be managed responsibly. Together, these perspectives highlight the importance of grounding policy and practice in both evidence and lived experience.Organised by
