Why attend

Controversial or commonplace, wildlife use shapes conservation outcomes. This session moves beyond emotion to examine trophy hunting through evidence, and shows how community-based harvesting of African geranium creates fair, sustainable value chains.

Session Description

Wildlife use can divide or unite. Dr. Dilys Roe presents findings from a global evidence review on trophy hunting, cutting through rhetoric to examine its ecological and socio-economic impacts. In contrast, Dr. Frank Vorhies shares the story of African geranium harvesting in South Africa and Lesotho, where community-based practices certified under FairWild show how wild resources can be managed responsibly. Together, these perspectives highlight the importance of grounding policy and practice in both evidence and lived experience.
