Why attend
Discover how science-informed breeding techniques are helping save the Great Indian Bustard. Learn how lessons from other bustard species, combined with cryopreservation, accelerated progress and led to the successful production of chicks in record time.
Session Description
We review conservation breeding efforts for the Great Indian Bustard, a Critically Endangered scrubland bird species that counted less than 150 individuals. Since 2019, a conservation breeding program has increased the global population by more than 1/3. Here, we point out several key factors for the success of this program, including reliance on lessons learned from captive breeding programs from closely related species, and detailed technical and scientific approaches. We highlight how key methodologies, particularly the use of cryopreserved semen, significantly accelerated progress, saving critical time between founder acquisition and the successful production of the first chicks.Organised by
