Why attend

Gain insights into the latest monitoring technologies for protected areas while understanding the legal, ethical, and social justice dimensions of their use. Contribute to shaping guidelines and frameworks for responsible tech in conservation through interactive dialogue with experts, practitioners, and peers.

Session Description

This interactive session will explore how innovative monitoring technologies can enhance wildlife and visitor management in protected areas while addressing the legal and ethical considerations that accompany their use. Drawing on experiences from the Tech4Nature Spain Flagship, part of the global IUCN–Huawei TECH4ALL partnership, the session will highlight opportunities and risks in applying digital tools for conservation. Participants will learn about challenges linked to privacy, data protection, and informed consent, and engage with government representatives, protected area managers, technology developers, and legal experts. The discussion will focus on the European context, presenting Spain as a case study, and contribute to the development of guidelines and an ethical framework for responsible technology use in protected areas. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of both technological potential and the governance safeguards needed to ensure fair, effective, and socially just conservation outcomes.
