ICCAs and their role in meeting KMGBF through community-based monitoring and assessments

12/10/2025
14:00 - 15:30
Conference Hall A: Session Room 6
Session with interpretation

Why attend

At least 37% of the world’s land is collectively managed by IPLCs under customary tenure systems. IPLC conserved areas have much potential in achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. By community-based monitoring and assessment, the outcomes of IPLC-led conservation can be evaluated, and their contribution should be further recognized.

Session Description

Science-based ecological monitoring, especially IPLC-led monitoring, could demonstrate how indigenous people and local community contribute to different targets of KMGBF by evidence with lower costs, and in turn encourage their own conservation efforts and pride. In this session, participants can learn about some cases of community-led socio-ecological monitoring from Asia and Africa, and discover the actionable steps different stakeholders can take to conduct community-based monitoring and conserve nature with traditional knowledge.
Participants may have experiences, tools or suggestions on this topic, and a world cafe discussion will divide participants into 3 discussion groups on different topics they are interested in. Then the session would conclude with summaries of contents discussed and future actions.
