Why attend

Attend this session to explore how the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) empowers Indigenous Peoples and local communities in biodiversity governance. Learn from experts about ensuring full, effective participation in CBD decision-making and the lessons from past working groups shaping inclusive global conservation.

Session Description

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) established the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and Other Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity Related to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (SB8J). The establishment of the SB8J marks a historical recognition as the first international permanent body in the environment Conventions in recognition of the roles, rights, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples and local communities to biodiversity conservation and to ensure the full and effective participation of IPLCs in the implementation of the CBD at all levels. Panellists will present views on the full and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples in biodiversity decision-making including the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and Other Provisions of CBD Related to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities and how it can work based on the experience of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Intersessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
