This panel explores why communities so often struggle to exercise those rights—and what it takes to overcome political, financial, and bureaucratic barriers. Expect hard truths, lived experiences, and provocations on turning legal recognition into real-world authority.
Session Description
Communities may win legal recognition through treaties, policies, or court rulings, yet still face endless barriers to exercising those rights. Bureaucratic blockages, corruption, overlapping jurisdictions, and lack of resources often turn promises into frustration. This panel confronts the gap between rights on paper and rights in practice, with panellists sharing lived experiences from Africa, Central Asia, and North America. The discussion will expose trade-offs, highlight successes and failures, and question whether flawed frameworks can sometimes do more harm than good. Participants will leave with sharper insights into how Human-Centred Conservation can ensure rights are meaningful, implemented, and lasting.Organised by
