Hear from colleagues who created National Species Specialist Groups and Centers for Species Survival, and learn how to replicate this successful approach in your own country.
Session Description
Biological diversity predominantly concentrates in the tropics, while human, institutional, and financial resources tend to be located at higher latitudes both north and south. Addressing this biodiversity paradox requires the expansion and mobilization of human, institutional and financial resources around the world. The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SCC) has strengthened our capacity internally through National Species Specialist Groups (NSSG), and drawn on external support by partnering on Centers for Species Survival (CSS) around the world. In this session we hear from colleagues that have created NSSG, and organizations have establishment CSS jointly with SSC. Addressing the biodiversity paradox in this way also allows for attracting younger talent to the SSC, engaging actively with governments and other stakeholders on policy, and carrying out SSC business in multiple languages (in addition to the IUCN official languages).
