Why attend
In this session, attendees will hear about how Canada identify and report Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECM), advancing towards 30X30. Canada recognizes 241 OECM under private, indigenous, and government management. This session will help you understand how OECM can mainstream conservation and bring innovative partners managers into the conservation conversation.
Session Description
In the past years, contributions to global biodiversity conservation in Canada was mainly the prerogative of the government. Since the IUCN released its OECM assessment tool in 2023, Canada has used a domestically adapted assessment tool to identify and report sites managed in ways that achieve the conservation of biodiversity, but that are not protected areas or parks. By socializing the concept of OECM and recognizing that conservation efforts go beyond state actors in Canada, new partners have become key to mainstreaming conservation. In this session presenters will focus on Canada’s recognition of non-traditional conservation areas and actors, making conservation tent bigger and more inclusive.Organised by
