Session Description
The event “Challenges for Biodiversity in the Green Transition in Eastern Europe and Central Asia” will examine the complex relationship between biodiversity conservation and the region’s transition toward sustainable, low-carbon development. While the green transition offers new opportunities, it also poses significant challenges for biodiversity, with growing pressures from land-use change, infrastructure expansion, and certain climate change mitigation strategies.Key issues include the persistence of traditional practices, gaps in legal frameworks, and insufficient funding for biodiversity protection. Major threats, such as habitat destruction and fragmentation, pollution, and climate change, remain pressing. Safeguarding biodiversity will require integrating conservation goals into economic development, especially in the areas of energy transition, infrastructure, and agriculture. Early action, stronger regional cooperation, and well-connected networks can provide essential support for biodiversity preservation and ecosystem restoration.
