Session Description

Join us for the screening of "Treasure of the Caribbean" and a dynamic panel discussion, inspired by this PBS documentary and its companion campaign, the Big Fish Initiative (BFI). This conversation will explore how powerful storytelling, visual media, and targeted outreach can strengthen partnerships between scientists, communities, and policymakers working to protect critical fish spawning aggregations and the coral reefs they inhabit. Panelists will share insights into how film can spark awareness, build trust across diverse stakeholders, and lead to funding, partnerships, or policy shifts. By highlighting the successes and challenges of the BFI and other case studies the discussion will demonstrate how creative communication strategies play a vital role in advancing species recovery and sustainable fisheries management. Audiences will gain a deeper understanding of the intersection between science and storytelling—and how collaborative, media-driven approaches can drive lasting impact for ocean ecosystems and coastal communities alike.
