Olivier Clement GATWAZA

Biography

Dr. Olivier Clément Gatwaza is a Rwandan landscape architect and civil engineer with a career spanning community development, land management, and sustainable design.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the National University of Rwanda (2007–2011) and pursued advanced studies at Beijing Forestry University, where he completed both a Master’s and a PhD in Landscape Architecture (2015–2023).

From 2012 to 2014, Dr. Gatwaza served as the Head of Community Settlement & Urban Planning and Acting Director of the District Land Bureau, leading land-use policy development, municipal zoning, and inclusive housing strategies. Since 2020, he has worked at the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), promoting global initiatives to leverage bamboo and rattan for climate resilience, green economic growth, and sustainable livelihoods.

A proponent of nature-based solutions, Dr. Gatwaza bridges technical expertise with community engagement and advocates for policies that preserve ecological integrity while improving human well-being.
