Biography

Ms. Yumi Son is the Coordinator of the Regional Coordination Unit (RCU) for the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem Phase II (BOBLME II) Project, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). In this capacity, Ms. Son provides strategic oversight and technical leadership to support sustainable management of fisheries, marine living resources, and habitats across the eight BOBLME countries: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

She plays a key role in coordinating a diverse partnership that includes IUCN, SEAFDEC, and BOBP-IGO, as well as national executing agencies. Ms. Son ensures the effective implementation of project components related to ecosystem-based fisheries management (EAFM), marine biodiversity conservation through Marine Managed Areas (MMAs), reduction of coastal and marine pollution, community resilience and livelihoods development, and regional governance mechanisms.

With extensive experience in ecosystem-based management, project coordination, and regional environmental governance, Ms. Son leads the harmonization of reporting across partners, oversees project monitoring and evaluation, and facilitates knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement at both national and regional levels. Her work is central to advancing the BOBLME Strategic Action Programme and fostering long-term sustainability in one of the world's most productive and biodiverse marine ecosystems.
