Why attend
The K-M GBF requests for strong cooperation to ensure its full implementation. The event will show the value and process of creating a Global Network of MPA Manager Networks to promote cooperation between MPA related institutions and key stakeholders, working at national, regional and global levels to improve management effectiveness.
Session Description
Many countries are working to protect 30% of their jurisdictional waters using diverse area-based tools. Yet, Target 3 of the KM-GBF emphasizes not only coverage but also management quality and social inclusion. Achieving this requires systemic approaches and collaboration beyond MPA boundaries. This session highlights the creation of a Global Network of MPA Manager Networks, which currently brings together over 25 regional and national institutions—including MPA networks, government agencies, regional conventions, and conservation funds—from multiple ocean regions. The initiative fosters cooperation through knowledge exchange, capacity-building, sustainable financing, and linking local management with global policy frameworks. A special focus will be given to Brazil’s new network of MPA managers, “RedeMar,” presenting outcomes from its first meeting in Tamandaré, Pernambuco (August 2025). The session will also address the Global Network’s contribution to preparations for IMPAC6, the International MPA Congress to be held in Senegal in 2027.Speaker
