Why attend

The Whale Shark Conservation Project is India’s only initiative dedicated to protecting the world’s largest fish with support from the Government, communities, and corporations. This event also marks the release of Towards a New Horizon: Conserving India’s Gentle Giants, documenting interventions that rescued and released over 1,000 whale sharks.

Session Description

Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), with 27 years of conservation experience, has been at the forefront of whale shark conservation in India for over two decades. Since 2004, WTI has not only helped secure Schedule I legal protection for whale sharks under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, but also pioneered community-based rescue programs, photo-identification, satellite tagging, and fisher compensation schemes. Supported by Government bodies, private partners and coastal communities, The upcoming event will unveil a report documenting India’s multi-stakeholder Whale Shark conservation journey and will feature conversations around the efforts, outcomes, and future directions.
