Explore what happens after conservation success. From reintroduced desert bighorn sheep in Texas to Mozambique’s community-led elephant conflict solutions, and global insights from the IUCN Human-Wildlife Conflict Specialist Group, this session reveals practical strategies for balancing thriving wildlife populations with human wellbeing.
Description de la séance
This session traces the pathway from species recovery to coexistence in human-dominated landscapes. “From Extinction’s Edge to Everyday Encounters: The Return of Desert Bighorn in Texas – A Community Restoration Story” explores how cross-sector collaboration enabled the successful reintroduction of desert bighorn sheep to Franklin Mountains State Park. “Coexistence by Design: Farming Safely at the Edge of the Wild” presents the Protected Farming Communities initiative from Mozambique, showing how proactive management reduces elephant crop raids, secures food, and strengthens resilience. “Guiding Global Solutions: Inside the IUCN Human-Wildlife Conflict Specialist Group” highlights the role of this impartial advisory body in understanding human-biodiversity trade-offs and providing knowledge to shape coexistence strategies worldwide. Together, these stories demonstrate that coexistence requires not only recovery but also careful management, local leadership, and evidence-based guidance.Organised by
