A key opportunity to identify pathways to reinforce the African Union - European Union partnership in supporting the early implementation of the BBNJ Agreement, as well as signal support for the implementation of the EU Ocean Pact.

The BBNJ Agreement represents the most important advance in multilateral ocean governance in decades. Its effective implementation, however, will depend not only on ratification, but on partnerships that translate commitments into action. For both Africa and Europe, the challenge now is not only ratification, but early implementation that delivers credibility, fairness, and tangible benefits. The European Commission signalled its will to be a global environmental leader with the EU Ocean Pact and through the directive proposal to facilitate the entry into force of the BBNJ agreement at Members’ State level. Nevertheless, more efforts are needed to translate commitments into real action on the ground. As two regions with vast ocean spaces and strong global voices, the AU and EU have the opportunity to identify tangible pathways for how the Agreement will work in practice.Organised by
