Pourquoi participer

Discover how coral taxonomy drives conservation action. Learn how species-level data inform IUCN Red List assessments, guide reef management, and strengthen protection strategies. Gain insights from experts on overcoming taxonomic gaps and scaling biodiversity knowledge to support global coral reef conservation.

Description de la séance

This session explores the pathway from coral taxonomy to tangible conservation outcomes. Accurate species identification is essential for understanding distribution, endemism, and extinction risk, forming the foundation of IUCN Red List evaluations and guiding management strategies. Presenters will highlight case studies from the Red Sea to demonstrate practical applications of taxonomy in reef conservation. Key challenges — including taxonomic gaps, limited capacity, and underinvestment in biodiversity knowledge — will be discussed, alongside innovative tools and collaborative approaches addressing them. Participants will learn how species-level insights can inform conservation planning, prioritize protection of sensitive and threatened species, and translate scientific knowledge into effective policy and management actions. The session brings together scientists, policymakers, conservation practitioners, and funders to highlight the central role of taxonomy in safeguarding coral reefs.
