Por qué asistir

With two motions on synthetic biology currently under consideration at the IUCN, this panel discussion is both timely and essential. This session will provide a platform to explore the ethical, ecological, and governance dimensions, of synthetic biology, ensuring that decisions are grounded in IUCN’s core values and conservation principles.

Descripción de la sesión

As we prepare to vote on issues involving genetic engineering and its applications in nature, there is an urgent need for informed, inclusive, and critical dialogue. This session will provide a platform to explore the ethical, ecological, and governance dimensions, of synthetic biology.

Key discussion themes will be
• What threats could synthetic biology pose to ecosystems and biodiversity?
• How do synthetic biology interventions align—or conflict—with IUCN’s conservation goals?
• In what ways might these technologies disrupt Indigenous worldviews and conservation ethics?
• What responsibilities do current generations hold towards the next generations in deploying irreversible technologies?

Our objectives are
• To prepare IUCN members to meaningfully engage on discussions on synthetic biology
• To examine the potential ethical dilemmas posed by synthetic biology
• To assess the alignment of synthetic biology applications with IUCN’s mission to safeguard the integrity and diversity of nature
• To identify gaps and opportunities in current regulatory frameworks
