For the first time, IUCN has developed a global, union-wide strategy for Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation. This session will provide an in-depth overview of the strategy and highlight the role you can play in reversing the decline of freshwater biodiversity.
Descripción de la sesión
There is increasing attention placed on global water security due to increasing competition for water and the impacts of climate change on freshwater ecosystems. With the expected growing demand for water in the future, the value of freshwater ecosystems as habitat, service providers, and fundamental drivers of climate regulation needs to be recognised and effort to accelerate their protection and restoration accelerated. To safeguard freshwater biodiversity and ecosystems, a shift is needed towards improved valuation, management and sustainable use of freshwater resources. The first ever IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Strategy aims to demonstrate the importance of freshwater biodiversity, outline the main drivers of freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem loss and spur Union-wide engagement for strategies and action to safeguard these critical ecosystems. This session will engage IUCN Members and Commission Members to chart a path forward for implementation of the Freshwater Biodiversity Strategy.Organised by
