This event will explore Australia's progress and pathways to achieving its commitment to protect at least 30% of lands and oceans by 2030 (‘30x30’) under the Global Biodiversity Framework. Australia is making progress towards this target, with land protection increasing from 7% in the mid-1990s to 22% in 2024, supported by all levels of government. To reach the 30% target on land, an additional 60 million hectares must be protected. Four demonstrably effective pathways are presented which offer the greatest chance to establish a comprehensive, adequate and representative protected area system: 1) establishing a AU$5 billion fund to purchase high-biodiversity land; 2) expanding Indigenous Protected Areas with long-term funding; 3) increasing uptake of permanent conservation covenants on private land with stronger incentives; and 4) reviewing public land for protection opportunities on high-conservation value land.
