In this talk, I will share how Al Ain Zoo’s Humboldt penguin colony became a case study in aligning husbandry with natural history. From solving bumblefoot issues through behavior-based management, to simulating natural burrow nesting and designing a sustainable breeding program, I will demonstrate how welfare challenges can be addressed by looking to nature for answers. The session highlights practical strategies that combine welfare, enrichment, and conservation planning, and shows how this philosophy can be extended across species to create meaningful, lasting impact.Speaker
