This session will explore key factors underlying overfishing and unsustainable fisheries, with a deep dive into harmful subsidies and how they are being addressed by the WTO’s Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. Author Duncan Leadbitter will share lessons learned from the IUCN report “Unselective, unsustainable, and unmonitored trawl fisheries?”, fisheries economist Dario Pinello will give a primer on subsides and their impact on fisheries, and policy advocate Megan Jungwiwattanaporn will explain how the newly entered into force WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies can now address harmful subsidies for real world impact.
